And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And God made two great lights the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. Gen.1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Bible, King James Version Bible, King James Version However, there are many settings in which these simple solutions are unsatisfactory. 4 There are also several stand-alone packages that simplify the calculation of power, for example, PASS (NCSS Inc., Kaysville, Utah). 2, 3 Major statistical packages such as SAS (SAS Institute, Cary NC) contain routines for power calculation, and both functions and packages for power calculation are available for the free and open-source R environment. 1 Power for logistic regression can use iterative techniques or relatively simple formulae. For instance, the power for an ordinary least squares regression is described in basic textbooks. In many settings, the question of how to calculate power is reasonably well addressed by closed-form equations or easily tractable mathematical methods. It is often ethically unjustifiable to randomize more subjects than are required to yield sufficient power, and it is a waste of resources to invest time or money in studies that have little chance of rejecting the null or when power is far greater than necessary. “Statistical power” is defined as “the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis, given that some particular alternative hypothesis (“the alternative”) is true.” Power is particularly important from the perspectives of ethics and of allocating scarce resources. The method can easily be used when preliminary data are available, as is likely to be the case when research is performed in health delivery systems or other settings where electronic medical records can be obtained. We also demonstrate power calculations for correlated censored survival outcomes in a cluster-randomized trial setting, for which we are unaware of an analytic alternative. We show with a simulation study that bootstrap power calculation can replicate analytic power in cases where analytic power can be accurately calculated. We are not aware of bootstrap power calculation being previously proposed or explored for cluster-randomized trials, but it can also be applied for other study designs. In contrast, bootstrap power calculation requires initial data that resemble data that are to be used in the planned study. So, for example, for cluster-randomized trials, power calculations need not depend on intracluster correlation coefficient estimates from outside studies. Notably, it is simple to achieve great fidelity to the proposed data analysis method and there is no requirement for parameter estimates, or estimates of their variability, from outside settings. This method of calculation has several important strengths. It provides a relatively simple solution to power calculation that is likely to be more accurate than analytic solutions or simulation-based calculations, in the sense that the bootstrap approach does not rely on the assumptions inherent in analytic calculations. Bootstrap power calculation is a natural application of resampling methods. Later, diagnostics and analytics are sent to the cloud so that network administrators can better understand usage and behavior on their networks. Administrators manage white and black lists on the cloud, and that data is distributed to endpoints using guidance from Dope itself, which says that it’s crunching through some 700 terabytes of content to understand threats on the internet. That reduced hop not only means less time spent in transit, it also lowers the chances of the whole system falling over.ĭope uses the cloud, but only for certain aspects of the service. The problem has been compounded by more traffic moving to the cloud and more people working from disparate locations.ĭope describes its approach as “fly direct”: The end point is where the traffic is evaluated before it is allowed through (or not, as the case may be). This essentially causes delays and can even result in total failure when something doesn’t work correctly. Typical secure web gateway products built to work in the cloud essentially send all of their traffic to servers before letting it proceed or blocking it. In his view, as computing has shifted wholesale to the cloud, moving security to the cloud to manage that change has been a misfire. “I heard how customers complained about how, when it doesn’t work properly, you don’t have web access at all.” “I lived SWG day in and day out,” he said. Symantec is one of the world’s best-known purveyors of secure web gateways and other security products, so Agarwal saw firsthand just how long it took Symantec to make any changes to the product and the problems with how the product works today. It did not disclose its valuation.Īgarwal said he first came up with Dope’s central premise when he was working at Symantec, where he started as an engineer working on SWG and worked his way up to product manager and eventually, general manager. The Series A round was led by GV (Google Ventures), with Boldstart Ventures and Preface, which backed the startup last year when it was still in stealth, also participating. New features will include a Dope API later in the year, and a “zero-trust” layer for organizations that need that extra level of security, said Kunal Agarwal, Dope’s founder and CEO, in an interview from its HQ in Mountain View, CA. It believes this approach makes it easier to use, more secure, less prone to failures, significantly faster, and more privacy-friendly for users.ĭope plans to use the funding for hiring, business development, and to continue enhancing its product with more features. In contrast to being routed through the cloud and data centers or large and expensive on-premise network appliances (some the popular approaches for such services these days), Dope has designed a secure web gateway product that’s run on an organizations’ endpoints: computers and other devices connected to the company network. Today, an SWG startup called curity said it raised $16 million to fuel its efforts to do just that. But this is a product that’s been around for decades, which means there remains a lot of room for innovation and improvement. Secure web gateways, the network security services designed to help organizations enforce IT policies around internet usage by blocking (or letting through) certain traffic, are one of the most common investments that organizations make in their cybersecurity profiles. The iPhone has become a staple device for many of us, allowing us to stay connected, take photos and videos, and perform countless tasks on the go. A week before the encounter we got a call from Ryan saying that our encounter is postponed until at least 2 weeks later because they have a mermaid event. I had taken the day off work to accommodate their schedule. We have booked an animal encounter for my son’s birthday for a Friday afternoon because the Aquarium reserves the animals for birthday parties on weekends. I googled "discount adventure aquarium tickets" and got a great discount code that saved $25 off the regular price! We loved the hippo exhibit! I think a visit when the outdoor areas are open and accessible would allow people to spread out more. The aquarium itself is a standard set up.walking around the outside of the tank with viewing windows. People also need to realize they cannot stop in the middle of a hallway with a baby coach and their family members. Once inside and through security, the place was packed with baby strollers! There is not enough room for people to maneuver through the common areas. We proceeded to the entrance (entrance sign) only to find that it wasn't the entrance? We were directed back to a random set of doors with a rock holding it open? There were no staff directing the guests that were outside of the marked lines and down the sidewalk. We had purchased tickets online to avoid the ticket line. It was a crowded Saturday morning around 11:00am. We visited the aquarium with our grandchildren. As we left around 2:00 the lines wound around the building with no improvement in the weather. We only had to wait out in the bitter cold for a brief time. My advise would be to arrive as close to opening time (10:00 a.m.) as possible. Not being a fastfood aficionado I found the smell of all that grease a bit off putting There are also a number of child play areas but they really aren't necessary and certainly a distraction to the original purpose of going to the aquarium.Īll in all it was quite a pleasant way to spend the day. As soon as you enter the building there was a huge concession selling food! Every so often you ran into yet another fastfood location. The one rather strange part was all of the various food courts. There are a number of areas where anyone can pet/touch starfish, stingrays, and other such ocean dwelling animals. There was not enough time to see everything in one day and sadly the penguin exhibit will have to wait for another time. With encouragement he did make it across. The two year old was not quite sure and it states that no child can be carried they must walk on their own. There is a suspended bridge, completely enclosed with cargo netting over a pool of sharks. The hippos were very interesting and fun to watch playing with a ball. They even had a beautiful African Grey parrot in an aviary. There are terrariums with spiders, frogs, turtles and such. There are beautiful aquariums with exotic fish - my favorite was the large yellow tropical fish. The name is misleading as the exhibits include all kinds of animals. Recently we took my grandsons to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ. Oh and try and go when the weather is nice so you can stroll the promenade outside and enjoy the great river views. I would have been pretty disappointed if I paid full price for a family of four. Just be sure you have a promo code or some sort of discount coupon. So the $25 stuffed shark I bought doesn’t just help maintain the penguins, it supports a corporate entity. Mind you, the aquarium is no longer a non-profit it’s a for profit venture. You exit their best exhibit through a giant gift shop and along the way there were plenty of professionals willing to take your photo for a fee. Otherwise admission for 4 would gave been more than $100! Inside also turned me off as we passed claw machines, multiple food concessions, dippin dot machines and massage chairs. Luckily they had a promotion going so my two kids were free. What turned me off about AA was the expense. The other exhibits were certainly fine but nothing extraordinary or particularly exotic. Unfortunately, the hippos were not on display but I would imagine them to be the second best attraction. Shark tunnel was very cool and by far the highlight. AA is a fairly small aquarium but certainly enjoyable enough. |
